HurleyCon 2: The Wrath of Con will be held Saturday March 7 at the Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center! The con will be open to the public from 10-5, and admission is FREE!!! It promises to be a great show, even better and more awe-inspiring than the first HurleyCon!
Let's take a look at just a few of the reasons you should attend the Wrath of Con:
• It’s awesome! • Free admission to the public! • The first HurleyCon drew a slew of local press coverage and many attendees from 100s of miles away! • Special guests galore! • Jeremy Haun – Artist of Captain America/Iron Man, The Leading Man, Battle Hymn, and TV’s Chuck! • Galileo – Astronomer! Philosopher! Scholar! (unconfirmed) • Kevin Mellon – Artist of Thirteen Steps, Gearhead, and Antoine Sharpe: The Atheist! • Napoleon – Frenchman! Conqueror! Midget! (unconfirmed) • Dennis Hopeless – Writer of Gearhead, Cupid, and some upcoming book about TORNADOES! • More guests to be announced! • Dozens of vendors with fabulous deals on tons of great merchandise! • Excessive use of hyperbole and exclamation! • The first HurleyCon drew a crowd of over 300 people! HurleyCon 2 is threatening to shatter that record into a million itty-bitty-teeny-tiny pieces! • And last, but not least, IT’S AWESOME!
More info as it becomes available. Check back for updates and let us know in the forums if there's anything you want to see at HurleyCon! |
First Read: July Previews
:: Posted by Nathan Hurley @ 10:32 am on Friday, Jul. 4th :: 0 comments :.
With the June order in the bag, I thought I’d browse through the July Previews for the first time. Here are just a few things that stood out to me:
Northlanders Vol. 1 TP [DC Comics] – Viking stories and myths have always fascinated me. Vertigo is one of the highest quality imprints in the comics industry. Brian Wood has been putting out some great and thought-provoking material lately. And the trade is only $9.99. Add all that together and you have a winner.
X-Men: Magneto – Testament #1 [Marvel Comics] – Magneto has to be one of the coolest villains ever. It was a genius move to make one of the most hated terrorists in the Marvel universe also a Holocaust survivor. Suddenly everyone can sympathize with one of the world’s greatest victimizers when they learn he was also one of history’s greatest victims. Honestly, I’m surprised no writer has fleshed out his childhood yet.
Galveston #1 [Boom! Studios] – Pirates! Westerns! Together! Two real historical contemporaries in the Old West having the kind of adventures you’d expect out of pirates and outlaws. With the pirate renaissance since the Disney movies and the staying power of the western genre, this book has a fairly broad audience.
Veeps HC [Top Shelf Productions] – I find it funny that in modern political campaigns, the most important factor in picking a vice president is their home state. VPs are some of the least well-known famous people out there, and if the solicitation is true, there were some characters in that office. Edutainment that might actually be educational and entertaining.
Becoming Batman: The Possibility of a Superhero HC [Books Section, pg. 384] – Part physical fitness manual, part comic. The author combines his knowledge as a neuroscientist and a martial artist (seriously, who comes up with that combination) to investigate just how realistic it would be to become a superhero. Using Batman as his goal, E. Paul Zehr discovers the methods and tools needed to become a skill-based (as opposed to power-based) superhero.
Of course, your taste in comics may differ. Let us know on the forums which items you find fascinating! |
First Read: June Previews
:: Posted by Nathan Hurley @ 11:47 am on Saturday, May. 31st :: 3 comments :.
The June Previews came out this Thursday, and here are just a few of the products inside that jumped out at me:
Bernie Wrightson’s Frankenstein [Dark Horse Comics]: Great classical literature and amazing art. Wrightson was at Planet Comicon earlier this year and was one of the biggest draws of the show. His art is well-known for a reason, folks, and this hardcover has 47 full page pieces. Even better, this hardcover includes the full text of the original novel!
The Cat With A Really Big Head (And One Other Story That Isn’t As Good) [Amaze Ink]: I bought this book the first time it was offered in Previews, and the name says it all. The titular story is not incredibly great literature, but it’s a fun story with art that captures the silly, sad, and funny aspects of the story perfectly. The other story is okay, but honestly isn’t as good. Not good enough to challenge Watchmen’s place in our hearts, but easily worth the $3 price tag.
The Man With No Name #1 Wanted Poster Blank Cover [Dynamite Entertainment]: I think the blank convention covers are a really neat idea for the comics industry as a whole. This is easily the coolest concept for one.
Owly Vol. 5: Tiny Tales GN [Top Shelf]: I could recommend this based on the expressiveness of the characters in the art. I could recommend this as a perfect use of imagery rather than words to convey meaning. I could recommend this because of its rich characters and its ability to tell rich stories without a single word. But I shouldn’t have to, because the book is so gosh darn adorable it should sell itself.
Secret Invasion: Inhumans #1 [Marvel Comics]: Ever since the Son of M miniseries, the Inhumans went from being lame Fantastic Four supporting cast members to being interesting and dynamic characters with an active role in the events of the Marvel Universe. It’s nice to see that these characters matter again, and I think this series has potential to be good without being overly dependant on the Secret Invasion series to make sense.
Obviously there is plenty more in this month’s Previews. What jumps out at you? Sound off in the forums with other great finds! |
Come see us at Planet Comicon!
:: Posted by Hurley's Heroes @ 8:40 am on Wednesday, Mar. 26th :: 0 comments :.
Planet Comicon is coming up April 5 and 6. This is the area's largest comic convention with great guests and tons of dealers. Hurley's Heroes will be setting up a booth at the show. So come by and see us, as well as all of the comic creators!
For more information, please visit Planet's website.
After Planet, the website updates will begin to roll in as our convention schedule frees up a bit. Until then, we appreciate your patience, as well as any suggestions you may have to improve the site. |
hurleysheroes.com now available!
:: Posted by Webmaster @ 1:08 am on Sunday, Mar. 9th :: 3 comments :.
The brand new Hurley's Heroes website is now up and fully functional! And just in time for the very first HurleyCon! Be sure and join us from 10am-4pm at the Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center this Sunday (today!) for loads of fun and excitement. Not only is it completely FREE, there's gonna be tons of dealers and great guests making it the biggest comic convention EVER to hit Joplin!
Okay, the website is up. It looks great so far and works perfectly. However, we're still not satisfied completely. Look forward to tons of new and extra features showing up often. We'll keep you updated on when new things are added and how they work to make sure you enjoy the best shopping experience possible. If you think of any cool ideas, drop the webmaster a line (that's me!). Either send me a message via PM on the board or just drop me an e-mail at hugin@kindredcircle.org
Extra things to look forward to very soon: - We'll be adding a shop so you can browse and purchase our wide selection of back issues and trades. - We're currently looking into letting you browse for only certain artists and writers in the Previews section that way if you want any stuff written by Brian K. Vaughan, it's just a click away. - General cleanup. The site is still new and fresh out of the package. Things still need to be tidied up here and there just to make things more organized and easy to read. - Again, we'll keep you updated on any new additions and updates to the site!
Sincerely, -Brad |
